It notifies me when there are available updates and gives me the option to: Install Now, Install Later, or Ignore. I don't even have to type in the apt command. But it is still completely under my control.
I have used - or at least played with - many different distros. Each has it's good and bad points for anyone's preferences. Had to say that one is "better" than the other. There are a few duds, but mostly it's a matter of what one wants to do with it and what one's level of experience is.
I worked in IT years ago. I have forgotten more than I ever knew, but Linux is still my go-to.
I didn't mind Ubuntu, yet always went back to Debian for GPL philosophical reasons. I have Nvidia graphics and always felt really guilty when installing proprietary Nvidia drivers in the Linux kernel. My computer always gave a message along the lines of: do you really want to do this? saying "yes" is so very hard to do : (
I don't have bleeding edge hardware, so Debian gives me the desktop I want with access to what is under the hood.
You're right of course, Linux has a distro for just about everyone, from everyday desktop users to gamers and medical professionals.
