No "like" option?

#1
Am I missing something, or is it only possible to give a "like" to the initial post in a thread?

I don't see how to upvote or "like" replies, only the first post.
It's all the same 🐂💩, just a new shovel.

You can only "Like" an OP, not replies to an OP.  Replies to an OP, or anyone else, you can only "Rate".  The "Like" button only appears at the bottom of an OP, and only until you click it.  It then applies your "Like", and sends the user a message that another user..."Liked your OP!" in the 'comment' section of the message.  Once this happens, the "Like" button disappears for you, but remains available to other users who haven't "Liked" that OP yet.

In some ways, "Likes" are like "Flags" used to be on ATS.  You can only award one, and it can only be given to the OP.  Flags were a lot more prominently displayed on ATS (as actual flags above a post), which can be both good and bad.  Here, "Likes" are tracked below the user's alias in the info box, just above the "reputation" score, which is essentially how many positive "Ratings" you've received.  Any post or reply can receive a "Rate".

So, a given OP could receive both a "Like" AND a "Rate" from another user, but replies can only receive a "Rate".

I think it's a good system actually.

Edit - BTW, Cypherage also doesn't have any crazy calculated scores based on some mathematical formula of posts vs flags vs stars vs replies, or some other bizarre mathematical formula. I don't remember what that score metric was called now (WATS score, maybe?), but one of them displayed in your info box, and there was another one which only displayed in your profile somewhere. Neither one of them really made any sense to me, especially after ATS went Koo-Koo and started awarding people millions of stars for no reason (this was some software upgrade / switch which caused this). It was just like if you were there when the upgrade happened, you automatically got like 4 million stars added to your totals, and if you weren't there you got zippo. This pretty much threw any mathematical metrics out the window (while driving over a tall bridge)! I also understand there were other calculated metrics scores which only the Mods could see. There were 3-4 of them as I recall (like posts vs membership time, and stars vs. warnings, and a couple others).

I don't know if I ever got a message or maybe I deleted them like the rest of the notifications. I usually just delete them from the inbox and navigate to the thread.

Everything FCD said is spot on. You can also add comments to the ratings you give people. You can view them in the user panel in the drop down menu under your name on the top right.

Just click details to see comments.

It's not a DM/PM message in your inbox.  It just shows up as another 'rating' when you click on your reputation.  That's actually why I mentioned it.  When I first saw this I was puzzled at how everyone could write the exact same words..."Liked your OP!"  Then I realized this message was system generated when someone gave you a "Like" for an OP (different from a "Rate").  It's in the comments field when you look at reputations.

edit - The actual text reads..."Positive (+1): Liked your OP!!!"

Yes, good explanation FCD.

You 'Like' an OP, sort of like other sites have 'Flags'

You 'Rate' a comment, sort of like other sites have "Stars'

Cheers!
