Apparently, this is how Romanian elections for president work:
Quote:According to Romanian law, the candidate who receives more than half of the votes included in the lists is recognized as the winner of the presidential election. If the votes are less than 50%, then a second round of elections will be held in two weeks, where the winner will be the one who gets a simple majority.
The second round of the Romanian presidential election is scheduled for May 18.

The latest election results are being disputed in the Romanian courts.
Quote:A lawsuit has been filed again before the Romanian Constitutional Court, challenging the results of the first round of the presidential elections.️
This time, a certain Sebastian Popescu appeared as the plaintiff.
It should be noted that after the previous annulment of the results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania and the removal of the winner Călin Georgescu, an unwanted candidate – George Simion – won again in the new elections.
By the end of the week, the Romanian Constitutional Court must review this lawsuit and make its ruling.

What the (German) article below is saying is Simion, should he win the election, can appoint Georgescu as prime minister of Romania.
Quote:George Simion's first promise of election was "justice for Calin Georgescu". In Romania's semi-presidential form of government, the president does not have as far-reaching powers as in France, but far more than in Germany or Austria, for example. This begins with the President sitting in the EU Council and not the Prime Minister. Robert Fico and Viktor Orban will have another ally against the EU Commission with Simion. This brings a blocking minority in the Council much closer. Four Member States are needed.
But what happens to “People’s President” Calin Georgescu? The Romanian president appoints the Prime Minister, of course in consultation with Parliament, because there he needs a majority. Simion had regularly placed in the space to make Georgescu the Prime Minister. Simion's election promise is clear here: to bring Georgescu “headed” to the country – just as Romanian voters have actually elected.
Simion himself becomes president – provided he wins the run-off election and that is probable. In parliament, a coalition critical of the EU would not have a majority. But new elections could change that. Simion had announced this wish. On its own, the president cannot call new elections, but the coalition is now broken, the chances are significantly increasing. The president's constitutional powers to obtain a new election have often been at the centre of fierce political conflicts. The resignation of the Prime Minister and the breach of the current coalition significantly increases the chance of a new election.
Does George Simion really make his promise? Unlike Georgescu, Simion is not a political outsider. He is the chairman and co-founder of the AUR party, who is sitting within the EU in the ECR Meloni Group. While Georgescu has announced that he would oppoe the construction of Europe's largest NATO base in Romania, Simion is “only” opposed to Ukraine’s aid.

Why am I not surprised . . .
While Simone has conceded the election, it is not without contention.
Not from Simone but from the guy who created the message app Telegram, a Russian fella by the name of Pavel Durov.
There is a bit of history here. The French imprisoned him a few years back for some reason, from memory it may have had to do with Telegram's success along with tight security. Durov was released eventually, probably with Russian president Putin's help.
It so happens that Durov was allegedly approached by the French government and asked to block certain channels on Telegram.
According to TASS (Russian State news site) via Pravda:
Quote:MOSCOW, May 18. /tass/. Pavel Durov, co-founder of the Telegram messenger, said that Nicolas Lerner, head of the French General Directorate of Foreign Intelligence, asked in the spring to silence the channels of Romanian conservatives on the eve of the presidential election, to which he was refused.
"This spring, at the Salon des Batailles exhibition at the Hotel de Crillon, Nicolas Lerner, the head of French intelligence, asked me to silence Romanian conservatives ahead of the elections. I refused," he wrote on Twitter.
It seems that Macron can't keep his hands to himself in more ways than one.
The French of course have denied everything.

The Romanian court has dismissed Simion's complaint of election interference by France's Macron and Moldova's Sandu.
Quote:BUCHAREST, May 22 (Reuters) - Election authorities and independent observers have said the election was well-organised. The Constitutional Court, which said Simion's challenge was unfounded, will officially validate the election result on Thursday.

Durov isn't staying quiet.
Quote:
French foreign intelligence chief Lerner visited Romania two days before the presidential election, Durov said, referring to a Romanian journalist.
"Before his visit Valerie Hyer, an MEP and Macron's closest supporter, said that everything will be done to ensure that the next Romanian president is pro-European. So what was he doing in Romania after making such a promise?" the Telegram founder wrote on social media.

The French 'secret squirrels' tried to sway Durov to block content on Telegram. That didn't work out, so the Romanian government will get to decide what is and what is not undesirable content.
The new Romanian government must be worried that people suspect the elections were not above board. They apparently want to tighten the screws on social media.
Quote:A bill has recently been tabled in Parliament that force and social media to quickly delete illegal posts.
Posts that spread fake information or incites will be banned from mass promotion and sponsorship.
The legislation for provides also for penalties of up to 1% of turnover if these rules are broken.
They will be be enforced by the National Authority for Communications Administration and Regulation.
